Let me start by saying that this project is probably better for children 3 and up. He was able to understand small and big, but I felt like it was a little over his head. (He's 21 months here).

I created three different sized circles on the ground and labeled them S, M, L to symbolize small, medium, and large. Lincoln has been really into rocks lately so I explained that we were going on a rock hunt and needed to find big and small rocks. He was all about it!

He didn't quite understand that I wanted him to organize them by size and I had to do a lot of showing him where I was placing certain rocks and why. We then moved onto pieces of bark and focused on filling up the circles with items from nature and how some circles had more or less than others.

The main goal from this activity was to understand size discrepancy and use proper terms to describe it.

  2. Using proper math terminology appropriately
  3. Exploring the world around us
  4. Following simple directions
  5. Grouping items by a single characteristic
